When I heard Trump make that comment about ‘Black jobs’ during the debate, I was taken aback. It was like he was trying to classify certain low-paying, unskilled, and undesirable jobs as jobs that Black Americans should be doing. The veiled racism in that statement was disturbing, to say the least. These Airborne troops, or VDV, are not your average cannon fodder conscripts; they are considered the special forces of the Russian military. The VDV is an elite unit manned with a high percentage of contract personnel, indicating their importance in conventional warfare. As I sat down to read the latest news, I was shocked and appalled to learn that the Supreme Court has wiped out an anti-corruption law that prohibited officials from taking gifts in exchange for past favors. It seems that the distinction between bribery, which involves an illegal deal, and a gratuity, which can be a gift or reward for a past favor, is now being used to justify accepting gifts after the fact without consequence. This ruling essentially legalizes corruption and bribery, as long as the bribe is given after the corrupt act has taken place.

As I read the news about President Joe Biden’s decision to pardon US service members convicted because they were gay, I was both surprised and relieved. Surprised because I didn’t realize that this was still necessary in today’s society, and relieved because it finally addresses a historic wrong that has plagued the lives of so many individuals. The mass clemency that Biden will be granting to these veterans is a step in the right direction, finally overturning a discriminatory policy that forced around 100,000 people out of the military during the Cold War era.
