As a woman living in the United States, recent events surrounding the Texas Supreme Court’s decision to reject a challenge to the state’s abortion law have left me feeling not just disappointed, but deeply concerned about the direction our country is heading in terms of women’s rights and healthcare. The fact that this all-Republican court unanimously upheld a law that directly impacts the lives of women, denying them the right to obtain an abortion even in cases of serious pregnancy complications, is not just a blow to reproductive freedom, but a dangerous erosion of basic human rights.
The argument that the law’s exceptions are broad enough and that doctors would be misinterpreting it by declining to perform an abortion when the mother’s life is in danger is not just flawed but utterly ludicrous.… Continue reading
It’s inspiring to see someone like Melinda French Gates stepping up to donate a billion dollars to women’s rights. The impact of this kind of donation could potentially change the lives of so many women around the world. However, it does make me question why billionaires like her aren’t required to pay a fair share in taxes, like the rest of us do. Imagine the significant change we could make if everyone at that level contributed equally.
Nonetheless, it’s disheartening to see the cynicism and skepticism surrounding such generous donations. I understand the concerns about how the money will be used and whether it will truly benefit those in need.… Continue reading
Louisiana Governor Signs Bill Classifying Abortion Pills as Controlled Dangerous Substances
Louisiana, oh Louisiana, what are you doing? As if the state didn’t have enough issues already, now they have gone ahead and signed a bill that classifies abortion pills as controlled dangerous substances. Possession without a valid prescription can now land you up to five years in prison. Five years for simply possessing medication that has been safely used in 96 countries around the world since 1988. It’s mind-boggling and downright ridiculous.
The hypocrisy in all of this is staggering. While they claim that pregnant people who obtain the medications for their own use will not be prosecuted, the reality is that this new law sets a dangerous precedent.… Continue reading
I can’t even begin to comprehend the level of cruelty and ignorance that led to a Tennessee woman being denied an abortion after finding out that her fetus’ brain was not attached. It’s beyond devastating to think that she had to endure the pain of carrying a non-viable pregnancy to full term, losing an ovary, a fallopian tube, and her hopes for a large family in the process. The fact that lawmakers, who have no medical background, felt entitled to make decisions about her body and her future is utterly outrageous. It’s a clear violation of a woman’s right to make decisions about her own health and body.… Continue reading
As I delve into the disturbing reality of why some Republican lawmakers are vehemently opposed to raising the marriage age and are hellbent on preserving child marriage, one word comes to mind: hypocrisy. It is utterly perplexing how individuals in positions of power, who are meant to protect the vulnerable, can advocate for something as abhorrent as child marriage. The fact that there are lawmakers who actually argue that child marriage bans would encourage abortion is beyond comprehension.
The statistics speak for themselves – 300,000 minors were married between 2000 and 2018 in the United States, with 60,000 of those marriages involving an age difference that would be classified as a sex crime.… Continue reading
The case of Manahel, a Saudi women’s rights activist, has shed light on the deep-rooted issues faced by women in Saudi Arabia. It is heartbreaking to hear that she was asked to be killed by her own family in the name of “honor”. The concept of honor killings is barbaric and inhumane, yet it continues to persist in some societies, including Saudi Arabia.
It is appalling to see how the Saudi authorities have twisted the narrative by accusing Manahel of “terrorist offenses” for advocating for women’s rights and denouncing religious principles. The fact that she was sentenced for these so-called crimes is a clear indication of the oppressive nature of the Saudi regime and their blatant disregard for human rights.… Continue reading
As I read about Collin Davis, a Texas man who retained a high-powered antiabortion attorney to issue a legal threat against his ex-partner who was planning to travel to Colorado for an abortion, I am filled with a mix of anger, frustration, and disbelief. The audacity of someone to believe they have the right to interfere in a woman’s personal and private medical decisions is appalling.
Firstly, the idea that Texas, a state with no legal standing to demand that doctors in other states not perform abortions, is trying to probe an out-of-state abortion is not only intrusive but also unconstitutional.… Continue reading
As the political landscape continues to evolve and shift, it seems that with every passing day, new controversies and absurdities arise that leave us questioning the state of our democracy and the leadership of our country. Recently, Donald Trump made the outrageous claim that liberals actually wanted him to overturn Roe v. Wade. Let that sink in for a moment. The man who has flip-flopped on this issue multiple times now has the audacity to suggest that those who vehemently support women’s rights and reproductive freedom were somehow pushing him to dismantle one of the most crucial Supreme Court decisions in history.… Continue reading
As a liberal, it is both infuriating and disheartening to hear Donald Trump claim that liberals wanted him to overturn Roe v. Wade. Let’s set the record straight – this is a blatant lie. The reality is that a vast majority of Americans, regardless of political affiliation, support a woman’s right to choose. Poll after poll has shown that around 70% of Americans believe in upholding Roe v. Wade. So, for Trump to assert that “everybody wanted this to be done” is not only false but also a dangerous attempt to manipulate the narrative.
What strikes me the most about Trump’s constant stream of lies is his audacity.… Continue reading
It’s hard to digest the news of a Saudi Arabia activist being sentenced to 11 years in prison for the mere act of supporting women’s rights. Manahel al-Otaibi, who advocated for female empowerment on social media, found herself behind bars under anti-terror laws. It’s baffling how promoting something as basic as women’s rights can be construed as a threat to national security or classified as terrorism. The injustice and absurdity of this situation are glaring and disturbing, to say the least.
The blatant disregard for fundamental human rights, particularly women’s rights, in Saudi Arabia is nothing new. The country’s track record of suppressing dissent, especially when it comes to advocating for gender equality, speaks volumes about the oppressive regime in place.… Continue reading
