As I read the news that Trump openly admitted he only wants white people to come to the U.S., it struck a chord within me that resonates with a deep sense of disappointment and frustration. The fact that a sitting president would boldly proclaim such discriminatory and racially motivated sentiments is not only shocking but also incredibly disturbing. The countries he referenced, like Denmark, Switzerland, and Norway, are known for their high quality of life, social safety nets, and healthcare systems – things that the United States often falls short on. As I reflect on the news of Aimeen Penny’s sentencing to 18 years in federal prison for the bombing of the Community Church of Chesterland, I am filled with a mix of emotions. On one hand, the justice system has appropriately recognized Penny’s heinous act as a hate crime, and he is being held accountable for the destruction and fear that he instilled in the community. Trump has made the confirmation of 200 federal judges, including two Supreme Court justices, a significant part of his reelection campaign. But Hawley said religious conservatives right now are “very depressed,” particularly after Justice Neil Gorsuch, a Trump pick, wrote the decision providing LGBTQ workers with federal workplace protections.
