As I read about the Alabama secretary of state stating that the Democratic convention would be too late to get Joe Biden on the ballot this fall, I can’t help but feel frustrated by the blatant attempts at voter suppression. The deadline of August 15 has been in place since 1975, and while the Republican National Conventions in recent years have taken place after this date, Alabama is now enforcing it strictly when it comes to the Democratic nominee.

It honestly baffles me how the American political system operates. As an outsider, I can’t help but notice the blatant barriers that are put in place to discourage people from voting. In my country, the Netherlands, the government sends the ballot to your home address automatically once you turn 18. There’s no need to register, stand in long lines, or travel great distances. Voting is accessible and convenient. It seems as though the US government is actively working against the idea of democracy.

On Wednesday, the Georgia congresswoman posted on Twitter that “brainwashed people” who move from California and New York need a “cooling-off period.” Her comment was in response to a Twitter user who wrote he supports discriminating against Democratic transplants, including restricting their ability to vote for a period of time. He also wrote that they should have to “pay a tax for their sins.”
