As a parent, I was saddened and deeply affected by the news of the 5-year-old Utah boy who tragically died from an accidental, self-inflicted gunshot wound. The fact that this young child found a 9mm handgun in the back room of his house and was able to fire a single shot is absolutely heartbreaking. The boy’s parents and siblings were in the home but not with him in the room at the time of the shooting, which raises questions about how accessible and unsecured firearms can lead to such devastating consequences.

Being a part of the LGBTQ+ community, I cannot help but feel a certain sense of frustration and disappointment when I read about the recent events in Utah. It’s hard to fathom the audacity and cruelty of someone who would go out of their way to attack and endanger a young girl based on unfounded assumptions and prejudice. As I reflect on this story, it becomes clear that there are deeper issues at play here, issues that speak to the broader landscape of transphobia in our society.
