Israel’s decision to summon ambassadors of six countries that voted for Palestinian UN membership has sparked strong reactions and varying opinions. While some view this move as a necessary protest against what they see as rewarding terrorism, others believe that denying Palestinian statehood only perpetuates the ongoing conflict. As an outsider looking in, my personal sentiments lean towards the latter.

Granting Palestinian membership at this juncture may not be the most prudent decision. The Palestinian government lacks autonomy and operates more as a subordinate entity, beholden to external influences. The United States’ decision to oppose the Palestinian bid for full UN membership comes as no surprise, given the current state of affairs within Palestine. It is quite evident that the most expeditious path toward statehood for the Palestinian people is through direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, with the backing of the United States and other partners. In order for Palestine to even be considered for full UN membership, it is imperative that they establish a legitimate government that is not a front for a band of violent extremists.
