I watched in horror as a person engulfed in flames stood outside a New York courthouse where the Trump trial was underway. The reports from CNN described how the individual first tossed flyers into the air before self-immolating. The details surrounding the incident were disturbing, to say the least. What drove this person to such a desperate act? As more information emerged, it became apparent that this individual was a conspiracy theorist, not affiliated with any political group but rather consumed by delusions.

This incident of a man setting himself on fire in the protest area outside the Trump trial is truly disturbing, regardless of anyone’s political beliefs. As a liberal, it angers me to see such extreme and desperate actions being taken. The fact that someone would go to such lengths, risking their life or causing severe harm to themselves, is truly tragic. It makes me wonder about the state of mind and mental health of individuals who resort to such drastic measures.

The recent news of a US airman who tragically set himself on fire at an Israeli embassy has left me in a state of deep reflection. This horrifying act of self-immolation to protest the United States’ involvement in the Vietnam War is reminiscent of similar extreme protests in history, including the recent incident in front of the Israeli embassy. In the midst of such a horrific act, I can’t help but question what would drive someone to take such drastic measures and make the ultimate sacrifice for a cause.
