A Missouri fifth grader recently made headlines for raising enough money to pay off his entire school’s meal debt. This heartwarming yet disturbing story sheds light on a much larger issue that should outrage us all. The fact that children are forced into debt over something as basic as school meals is a sad state of affairs.

Children in elementary school should not have debt tied to their name. The idea that some high schools withhold privileges like attending prom or walking at graduation due to student lunch debt is appalling. Over 7,000 students see their lunch debts wiped after $1 million donation

Over 7,000 students in Georgia have been granted a sigh of relief as Arby’s Foundation stepped in to wipe out their lunch debts with a generous $1 million donation. While it’s heartwarming to see this situation resolved, it is deeply distressing that such a problem exists in the first place. As someone who has worked in education for years, I strongly believe that “lunch debt” should never be a thing.
