A new study estimates that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has resulted in over 2 million casualties, with Russia bearing the brunt of the losses. The research indicates that Russia has suffered approximately 1.4 million casualties, a figure that disproportionately affects poorer regions and ethnic minorities, and the nation is currently unable to replace troops at the rate they are being lost. Ukraine, meanwhile, is estimated to have between 525,000 and 625,000 casualties. The study highlights a widening casualty ratio in Russia’s favor, increasing to nearly eight to one in the first half of this year, attributed to Ukraine’s advancements in drone technology and a defense-in-depth strategy, alongside Russia’s attrition strategy, tactical failures, and low morale.
