Gonzales’s opponent, Brandon Herrera, has accused the congressman of exploiting Santos-Aviles’s death for political gain, while a former aide suggested Gonzales could have prevented her suicide. The San Antonio Express-News reported on the allegations, obtaining text messages that seemingly corroborate the affair, though Gonzales has denied the relationship and his attorney stated that while the affair was an “open secret,” it was not the cause of her death.
