Growing dissent against Hamas is evident in Gaza, with Palestinians openly protesting the group’s rule and blaming it for the territory’s dire crisis. Demonstrations featuring chants like “All of Hamas, out!” and “Hamas is garbage” highlight widespread discontent. Critics argue that Hamas’s actions have inextricably linked Gaza’s fate to its own, demanding the group relinquish control. This defiance underscores a disconnect between the global perception of Hamas as synonymous with Gaza and the reality of Palestinian opposition to its leadership.

Berlin’s Immigration Office issued deportation orders to four demonstrators—two Irish, one Polish, and one American—for alleged involvement in a pro-Palestinian protest at Berlin’s Free University. The orders, connected to property damage during the October 2024 protest, lack detailed charges and have prompted legal challenges. Concerns exist regarding the legality of deporting EU citizens based on freedom of movement principles, while the deportation justification cited Germany’s historical responsibility toward Israel. One Irish citizen already obtained an injunction halting their deportation pending a full hearing, and others are pursuing similar legal action.

Uday Rabie, a 22-year-old Palestinian, was tortured and killed by Hamas militants after criticizing the group and participating in anti-Hamas protests in Gaza. His brother, Hassan, stated that armed fighters affiliated with Hamas’ Al-Qassam Brigades abducted, tortured, and returned Uday, who later died from his injuries. The family publicly accused the Al-Qassam Brigades and shared evidence of Uday’s injuries and death, including a video showing him expressing fears for his life. While Hamas has previously affirmed the right to peaceful protest, they have not yet commented on this specific incident.

Hundreds of Palestinians in northern Gaza staged large-scale protests against Hamas, demanding an end to the ongoing conflict with Israel. The Justice Department is investigating Columbia University for allegedly harboring undocumented immigrants, following searches of university residences and the deportation of a student whose visa was revoked. The investigation stems from protests at the university last year and is linked to the administration’s broader crackdown on individuals involved in pro-Palestinian demonstrations. Two individuals connected to the protests, a doctoral student and a Palestinian woman, have been deported or arrested on immigration charges.

Following a months-long investigation into the Hamilton Hall occupation during last spring’s pro-Palestinian protests, Columbia University’s judicial board has issued sanctions against dozens of students. Penalties ranged from multi-year suspensions and temporary degree revocations to expulsions, reflecting the severity of individual actions. The university did not specify the number of students affected by each sanction. This action comes amidst other controversies, including a lawsuit by CAIR challenging the university’s release of student disciplinary records to Congress and the arrest of a student activist by federal immigration authorities.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed a lawsuit against the University of Michigan on behalf of five students and one community member, alleging violations of their First Amendment rights. These individuals received campus-wide trespass bans after participating in pro-Palestinian protests, despite never facing formal charges. The lawsuit argues the university abused its authority by issuing these bans, disrupting the individuals’ lives and education. The plaintiffs seek to overturn the bans and prevent future misuse of trespassing restrictions. The case highlights the ongoing tension surrounding free speech and protest activity on college campuses in the wake of the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Charges against Xavier Roa, a pro-Palestinian protester arrested under Nassau County’s Mask Transparency Act, were dismissed due to insufficient evidence. The Act, enacted in response to antisemitic incidents, prohibits masking to conceal identity but includes exemptions. Roa’s lawyer argued the law is unconstitutionally vague and prone to abuse, while the dismissal is viewed as a victory for civil liberties. Roa’s arrest, the first under the Act, sparked criticism for potentially silencing pro-Palestinian voices.

As I read about the incident where London police threatened to arrest an “openly Jewish” man near a pro-Palestinian protest, I couldn’t help but feel a mix of shock and disbelief. The fact that a man was targeted simply for being visibly Jewish in a public space is a stark reminder of the deep-rooted antisemitism that still exists in our society today. The idea that someone’s religious or cultural identity could be seen as a provocation, or worse, a justification for potential violence, is both alarming and deeply troubling.
The notion of being “openly Jewish” should not be a cause for alarm or a reason for someone to be singled out in such a hostile manner.… Continue reading
