Sushila Karki, Nepal’s former Chief Justice, has been sworn in as the interim Prime Minister, becoming the first woman to hold the position in the country’s history. The oath of office was administered by President Ramchandra Paudel following the dissolution of Parliament and the resignation of the former Prime Minister amid anti-corruption protests. Karki is highly regarded for her integrity and judicial independence, and she served as Chief Justice from 2016 to 2017. Syria’s de facto leader declaring himself president and abolishing the constitution isn’t entirely surprising, given the country’s history and current circumstances. The existing constitution, crafted under Assad’s decades-long dictatorship, is fundamentally incompatible with a genuine transition to a more representative government. Rewriting the foundational legal document is a necessary, if not entirely unexpected, step in the process of rebuilding the nation.
This action shouldn’t be interpreted as inherently positive or negative in isolation. The focus should instead be on the long-term implications and the steps taken to create a new constitution and ultimately, a more functional political system. The past few days have been an emotional rollercoaster for many of us, as we witnessed the seamless transition from Joe Biden to Kamala Harris in the Democratic Party’s election strategy. Initially, I was apprehensive about Biden stepping down and the potential chaos it could unleash within the party. The thought of intraparty disarray was a major concern, as it could have significantly weakened our chances in the upcoming election. However, as soon as Biden endorsed Harris and the momentum started building, my fears began to dissipate.
