Australia Taxes Big Tech to Fund Newsrooms Amidst Controversy
Australia has proposed new legislation to tax digital giants like Meta, Google, and TikTok a proportion of their revenue to fund news reporters. If platforms decline commercial agreements, a 2.25% tax on their Australian revenue would be imposed, with offsets provided for those who do pay publishers.
