I find it both intriguing and disheartening to witness the election of Claudia Sheinbaum as Mexico’s first female President. On one hand, it is a historic moment that breaks barriers and stereotypes, showing progress in terms of gender equality in leadership positions. However, on the other hand, the comments and opinions surrounding her election shed light on the complex and often corrupt nature of Mexican politics.
The fact that Sheinbaum was handpicked by outgoing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador raises questions about the extent of her independence and agency in leading the country. As a Mexican citizen who recently participated in the election that could potentially crown the first female president in our country’s history, I have some mixed feelings about the whole situation. The idea of “crowning” a president seems odd to me, as Mexico is a constitutional republic, not a monarchy. However, the fact that a woman may soon be taking the highest office in the land is definitely a milestone worth noting.

It’s absolutely mind-boggling to hear the Mexican president claim that criminal groups are ‘respectful’ and ‘respect the citizenry’. The sheer audacity and disconnect from reality is startling. How can anyone in a position of leadership make such statements, especially when the brutal actions of these criminal organizations are well-documented?
The notion that these cartels, who thrive on fear, violence, and corruption, have any modicum of respect is not just naive but dangerous. They operate with impunity, slaughtering people, trafficking drugs, and terrorizing communities.
