I can’t help but feel a deep sense of anger and frustration when I think about the tragic and senseless death of Sonya Massey at the hands of a law enforcement officer. The fact that the deputy charged in her fatal shooting had worked for 6 different agencies in just 4 years is deeply troubling. It begs the question – how was he able to continually move from one jurisdiction to another without facing any real consequences for his actions?

Illinois Police release body-cam video of fatal shooting of Black woman in her home

I just watched the body-cam video released by the Illinois Police of the fatal shooting of a Black woman in her home, and I cannot find the words to express my horror. The video shows Sonya Massey in her kitchen, holding a pot of boiling water, which she refuses to drop when ordered to by the officer. The officer, Grayson, needlessly escalates the situation by drawing his gun and ultimately shooting her in the head. The officer’s callous attitude after the shooting, refusing to provide medical aid and stating he won’t waste his supplies on her, is utterly abhorrent.
