A teen was falling asleep during a courtroom field trip. She ended up in cuffs and jail clothes

As I read through the disturbing account of a 16-year-old girl who fell asleep during a courtroom field trip only to end up in cuffs and jail clothes, my heart sank. The judge, Kenneth King, felt that her attitude was disrespectful and decided to orchestrate a display of power that traumatized and humiliated her in front of her peers. It’s truly baffling to me how falling asleep, a normal teenage behavior, led to such a drastic and unnecessary response.

What struck me the most was Judge King’s lack of empathy towards the teenager. Instead of considering the multitude of reasons why she could have been tired, he chose to assert his authority and teach her a lesson in the most appalling manner.… Continue reading
