In a recent prediction made by one of Donald Trump’s former lawyers, it is anticipated that the former President may face a six to nine-year sentence if convicted of charges related to the January 6th Capitol riot. While this may seem like a significant punishment for treasonous acts, I find it hard to believe that Trump will ever see the inside of a jail cell. The idea of him being brought into court in a wheelchair, with an oxygen mask, claiming cognitive issues and too ill for prison, seems like a far-fetched scenario to me.

I can’t help but feel a sense of justice being served upon hearing that a Jan. 6 rioter who attacked numerous officers has been sentenced to 20 years in prison. It’s a comforting thought that those who participated in the assault on our nation’s Capitol are facing consequences for their actions. We’ve seen more than 1,200 individuals charged and over 460 people sentenced for their involvement in the insurrection, and it brings some relief to know that accountability is being upheld, at least to some extent.

How can one even begin to make such a ridiculous comparison? MLK stood for justice, equality, and civil rights, leading peaceful protests to bring about positive change in society. As a former Marine, hearing about Tyler Bradley Dykes, an active-duty Marine at the time, who participated in the insurrection at the Capitol on January 6, 2021, is deeply troubling. It is disheartening to see a fellow service member betray their oath and engage in such heinous acts.
