Reflecting on recent global events, my mind can’t escape the troubled relationship between Israel and Palestine. This manifestation of conflicts, discrimination, and repression has become the new normal in this region. As an American citizen observing from afar, I’m often naively hopeful for signs of the cessation of these conflicts. And recently, these hopes were further raised by the statement made by Senator Bernie Sanders: “If Netanyahu says no to a Palestinian state, the US must say no to Netanyahu.” This proclamation certainly spurred a fermentation of thoughts in my mind which I’ll share in the rawest form.

As an Israeli, I must say that the recent events involving the death of 21 IDF soldiers while setting explosives in Gaza homes have left me deeply saddened and concerned. It is a tragic loss of life, and my thoughts and prayers go out to the families and loved ones of those brave soldiers.

In a recent statement, a Hamas leader rejected the idea of a two-state solution and proclaimed that the October 7 events revived the dream of a free Palestine. As I reflect on this headline and the various comments surrounding it, I can’t help but feel a sense of frustration and disappointment. The sentiment expressed by many individuals is that Hamas is not truly interested in the liberation of Palestine, but rather in their own political power and control.

Evidence points to systematic use of rape and sexual violence by Hamas in the 7 October attacks. These words are jarring and profoundly disturbing. The idea that a group could use such heinous acts of violence as a weapon is almost incomprehensible. Yet, as the comments and headlines suggest, this is a reality that we must confront.
It is undeniable that Hamas has committed numerous human rights abuses and acts of violence throughout the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
