Six men were recently sentenced for their involvement in an appalling act of human butchery and castration, a grotesque situation that now allows the possibility of an appeal against their sentences. The sheer horror of this case leaves me grappling with numerous thoughts and emotions. It’s staggering that anyone would ever voluntarily seek out such a procedure, let alone pay to have their own genitals removed. I can’t help but dive into the intricacies of the human psyche that allow some individuals to venture into such extremes.

Philip Zimbardo, the psychologist behind the infamous ‘Stanford Prison Experiment,’ has passed away at the age of 91. The experiment, which was intended to study the psychological effects of perceived power dynamics, quickly spiraled out of control, leading to ethical concerns and extreme participant distress. As someone who had a brief encounter with Zimbardo during my time in grad school, I can attest to the mixed feelings and controversial legacy he leaves behind.

I have to admit, it’s truly perplexing how easily Donald Trump and J.D. Vance seem to get rattled by being called “weird”. In a world where these two individuals have been labeled with far more severe accusations, it’s both amusing and bizarre that this seemingly innocuous term strikes a nerve. It makes me wonder, what is it about being called “weird” that hits so close to home for them?
