Trump’s defense against accusations of Vance being “weird” is to insist that Vance can’t possibly be weird because he’s “so straight.” The correlation Trump draws between being “straight” and not being “weird” is not only illogical but also deeply problematic.
Sexual orientation has absolutely nothing to do with one’s propensity to be strange or odd. The fact that Trump associates being straight with normalcy is a clear reflection of his narrow-minded and outdated mindset. As I read the news about UFC fighter Bryce Mitchell saying he will home-school his son so he doesn’t “end up turning gay,” I couldn’t help but be taken aback by the sheer ignorance and bigotry displayed in his statements. The fact that a grown man in one of the most physically demanding and, ironically, homoerotic professions possible is terrified of his son being gay is both laughable and deeply concerning.
