I can’t help but shake my head in disbelief at the absurdity of the recent comments made by Donald Trump regarding his running mate, JD Vance. Trump’s defense against accusations of Vance being “weird” is to insist that Vance can’t possibly be weird because he’s “so straight.” The correlation Trump draws between being “straight” and not being “weird” is not only illogical but also deeply problematic.
Sexual orientation has absolutely nothing to do with one’s propensity to be strange or odd. As I delve into the recent comments made by Donald Trump regarding JD Vance, I can’t help but feel a sense of amusement mixed with confusion. As I read the news about UFC fighter Bryce Mitchell saying he will home-school his son so he doesn’t “end up turning gay,” I couldn’t help but be taken aback by the sheer ignorance and bigotry displayed in his statements. The fact that a grown man in one of the most physically demanding and, ironically, homoerotic professions possible is terrified of his son being gay is both laughable and deeply concerning.
