This whole situation at Gettysburg College is truly disturbing. The fact that a student was targeted with a racial slur being carved into his chest is beyond comprehension. The use of the passive voice in the headline downplaying the severity of the incident is concerning. It’s not just a scratch, it’s a deeply traumatic act of violence.
The response from the school is even more troubling. The victim being removed from the swim team, the lack of immediate action towards the perpetrator, and the attempt to downplay the incident are all signs of a failing system. I am appalled and deeply disturbed by the recent news of two students at Gettysburg College being dismissed from the swim team after one of them allegedly used a box cutter to carve a racial slur onto another student’s chest. The fact that this kind of abhorrent behavior is still happening in this day and age is absolutely sickening. This is not a mere scratching, as the word used in the headlines suggests. This is a violent and hateful act of racism that should not be minimized.

As a proud American citizen, it is disheartening to see our country’s leader, President Donald Trump, make such ignorant and insensitive comments about one of the most tragic events in American history – the Battle of Gettysburg. His recent rant where he described this horrific battle as “beautiful” is not only historically inaccurate but also deeply troubling.
The Battle of Gettysburg was anything but beautiful. It was a bloody, brutal conflict that resulted in over 50,000 casualties, including 8,000 dead.
