Cleveland Mississippi Country Club refuses woman entry in event

As I read about the recent incident at the Cleveland Mississippi Country Club where a woman was refused entry into an event simply because she was a woman, my initial reaction was one of shock and disbelief. How is it possible that in this day and age, such blatant discrimination based on gender is still not only prevalent but openly practiced?
