Republicans Abandon Honor: Will It Backfire?
Drawing from Kwame Anthony Appiah’s work on honor, the article argues that President Trump’s actions and those of his Republican Party represent a significant erosion of the honor code previously upheld in American public life. Trump’s disregard for ethical conduct, as evidenced by his attempts to manipulate congressional districts, reflects a shift towards prioritizing power and winning at all costs. This behavior, including Trump’s lack of shame and adherence to a code of entitlement, undermines the principles of fair play and mutual respect necessary for a functioning democracy. The article suggests this decline in honor has consequences for both parties, fair elections, and democratic traditions.
