Romania Rejects Kremlin Criticism: Aggressor States Cannot Lecture on Democracy

The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) rejected Kremlin spokesperson Dmitri Peskov’s criticism of the Romanian Electoral Authority’s decision to invalidate Călin Georgescu’s presidential candidacy, calling it unacceptable interference in Romania’s democratic processes. The MAE highlighted Russia’s history of human rights abuses and lack of free elections, disqualifying it from lecturing on democracy. Romania’s response included the expulsion of two Russian diplomats for alleged contact with a Romanian group accused of treason. Following the expulsion of two British diplomats from Moscow for alleged spying, Russia’s foreign intelligence service (SVR) accused the UK of instigating both World Wars and of currently seeking to contain Russia through its relationship with the US. The SVR statement asserted that Britain’s actions represent a continued pattern of global conflict instigation. The expelled individuals, a man and a woman, were given two weeks to leave the country.
