As I read the recent news about Trump’s disturbing plan to assign immigrants “serial numbers,” I couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of unease and disbelief. The parallels drawn between this proposal and the darkest chapters of history, particularly the Holocaust, are chilling and cannot be ignored. The mere suggestion of branding human beings with serial numbers evokes images of dehumanization, control, and ultimately, mass persecution.

It never ceases to amaze me how far some individuals will go to discredit and dehumanize others, especially when it comes to women in positions of power. The recent demand by ex-Trump adviser Peter Navarro to stop using Vice President Kamala Harris’s first name because it supposedly “personalizes her” is not only absurd but also blatantly disrespectful.
The idea that using Harris’s first name somehow makes her more relatable is seen as a threat by some, as if acknowledging her personhood is a sign of weakness. Israel cannot use Oct. 7 as a license to dehumanize others, and this warning from Antony Blinken, the U.S. Secretary of State, is a reminder of the fundamental principle that every human being deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. The conflict between Israel and Palestine has become a breeding ground for hatred and dehumanization on both sides, with people reducing the lives and suffering of others to mere statistics or justifying violence and atrocities.

As I sit here, attempting to process the sheer audacity and cruelty of the words I have just read, I can’t help but feel a profound sense of exhaustion. How did we get to this point? How did we reach a place where Republican congressmen are openly discussing the idea of throwing migrants from helicopters? It’s almost too surreal to comprehend.
But then again, when I reflect on the current state of our political climate, perhaps I should not be entirely surprised. This is a party that claims to uphold “Family Values” while advocating for policies that tear families apart.
