The recent news of a mom being accused of doing just that is not only shocking but deeply disturbing. Deputies conducting a welfare check found an 8-year-old boy and a 6-year-old girl alone in an apartment in complete disarray, with trash and food scattered around and a strong smell of urine permeating the air. My heart sank when I read about this, but at least the children were found alive.
