As I sit here reading through the latest revelations about the fossil fuel industry’s knowledge of climate change as early as 1954, I can’t help but feel a mix of anger, frustration, and disappointment. As a scientist, I am utterly shocked and dismayed by the recent news of the hack that wiped 2 petabytes of data from the Russian research center, Planeta. This is an enormous loss, not only for Russia but for humanity as a whole. Planeta is a state research center that provides essential information and accurate predictions about weather, climate, natural disasters, extreme phenomena, and volcanic monitoring. The data they collect and analyze is crucial for scientists worldwide in understanding and improving our knowledge of the Earth’s climate system.
To put the scale of this loss into perspective, wiping 2 petabytes of data is equivalent to deleting approximately 60,000 hours of 4K video.… Continue reading
