Ford joining the list of companies walking back DEI policies may not come as a shock to many. The idea that profit-driven corporations would prioritize social issues like diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) over their bottom line seems somewhat idealistic. From what I’ve gathered, these companies, including Ford, only implemented DEI policies initially for good PR, and now they are scaling them back for the same reason. It’s a cycle of performative actions driven by profitability rather than genuine social advocacy.
The conversation around DEI has shifted from one of social awareness to a business tactic, where outside consulting groups define what a “proper” DEI program looks like.… Continue reading
As a UK millennial, the prospects of ever experiencing the same income boom that our elders enjoyed seem bleak, according to the study mentioned. My own experience mirrors that of many others in my generation – struggling to make ends meet, facing soaring costs of living, and feeling the weight of financial burden that is not entirely of our own making.
It is disheartening to see the stark contrast between the opportunities available to the older generations and what we face today. The wealth accumulation for many boomers came not from hard work or career advancement, but rather from housing appreciation and inheritances.… Continue reading
As I sit here reading the latest headline about the U.N. climate chief stating that we have two years to save the planet, I can’t help but feel a sense of exhaustion wash over me. It’s not that I don’t understand the gravity of the situation or the importance of protecting our planet for future generations. It’s just that these hyperbolic declarations seem to be more of a hindrance than a help in raising awareness and inciting real change.
I mean, how many times have we heard variations of this same message before? “12 years”, “18 months”, “30 years”, and now “two years”?… Continue reading
The American Dream, for so long the shining beacon that carried the promise of opportunities and prosperity to both citizens and immigrants, is fast fading. This assertion, voiced recently by Walgreens’ boss, is something of a wakeup call. He speaks primarily for himself and his ilk in the top echelons of wealth who believe that this wealth discrepancy is unsustainable and damaging the very fabric of our society. He insists that their taxes must be increased to mitigate the broadening wealth gap and the subsequent demise of the middle class—the real job creator, the driver of diverse industries and the sustainer of demand for a plethora of goods and services.… Continue reading
Yes but that’s also literally what makes it capitalism. Your job exploits your capability to make them money at a greater rate than they have to pay you. You aren’t all fairly compensated for your work because some of the proceeds of that work are instead funneled off to compensate those who did nothing more than provide capital for the company to utilise, in the form of stocks.
That’s what makes this form of work naturally exploitative. Contrast this with, say, a work situation where you barter your work on X project, for their work on y project for you; you cut my hair, I give you some carrots I grew.… Continue reading
We knew their infrastructure was crap when Harvey happened. Now this. My dad is still talking about “add DC and we will secede” and “Texas will have its own refinery and oil and jobs and wealth” and I clapped back that he better call his state representatives to pull that hand back for federal aid. One thing Texans always brags about is how they have their own independent power grid. How’s that working out?
Well, the point was to avoid regulations that would force them to do things like winterize their system.
So, exactly like intended?
It’s like trump gutting Obama’s pandemic system.… Continue reading
It boggles my fucking mind how we lost gamers to the right. Capitalism is the biggest cause of the decline of gaming. Microtransactions, gambling addiction loot crates, pay to win, selling games in piece meal snipets, charging full price for flawed garbage that will “get fixed later”, relying on the community to fix their shit for free(looking at modders and Bethesda), monopolistic growth removing competition and thus reducing quality and innovation, etc… Like gaming is a microcosm of the absolute failures of Capitalism. Everything wrong with Capitalism shows up in the gaming world. And all gamers think is “Look how feminism and diversity is ruining my video games!”… Continue reading
Right wing authoritarianism doesn’t creep. It’s overt.
Left wing version pretends to be something it isn’t. Either on purpose or lack of understanding. I think it’s mostly the latter, but there are certainly grifters on the left as well.
The authoritarian portion of both sides are non starters for me. The media amplifies these voices because it creates conflict.
Yeah. Left wing authoritarianism is just infantilization run amok rather than some strict desire to centrally control everything. Rent control, minimum wage, wokeness, gun control, it’s all very much like “you can’t seem to play nice so we’re going to make you play nice.”… Continue reading
