Radical Islamists gathering in Hamburg to call for a caliphate is a worrying trend that is gaining traction in our society. What surprises me the most is how the leader of this group, who only converted to Islam in 2015, is considered an authority figure among Islamists. It is baffling to see how quickly individuals flock to someone who lacks the traditional credentials and lifelong clerical study that are typically valued in Islamist circles.
