A striking finding was that half of Belgians now view the United States, traditionally an ally, as an adversary, with only 10 percent maintaining the “ally” designation. This perception is further underscored by a consensus that Europe must achieve full military and economic self-sufficiency, reflecting a desire for independence from American influence. Despite this mistrust, Belgians remain committed to NATO, viewing it primarily as a European defense shield.
