During their first date, Leslie Reeves and Chris Smith were shot, with only Smith surviving. Smith was found in his Illinois home with a bullet in his brain and was placed in a medically induced coma after brain surgery. Pieces of the bullet are still in his brain, as removing them could cause further harm. Smith recovered and can now move his left leg from his knee up, although he has no recollections from the night of the shooting. I can’t stop thinking about the man who was rescued 48km off the Florida coast, clinging to an ice box after Hurricane Milton. The sheer terror he must have experienced being stranded at sea during such severe weather conditions is unimaginable. The fact that he survived winds of 75-90mph and waves reaching up to 25 feet high is nothing short of a miracle. The image of him clinging to that cooler chest, waiting to be rescued, is haunting.

I can’t wrap my head around the fact that a fugitive father was filmed with his children in the New Zealand wilderness three years after disappearing. Three years in the bush with three small children is unimaginable. The New Zealand bush is a wild and unpredictable place, with weather that can change in an instant. I can only imagine the hardships they faced – freezing cold winters, constant rain, crazy hills and valleys to navigate. It’s a miracle they survived for so long out there.

Despite her hazy memory of the events, it’s clear that she was in a terrifying situation. Her adult disabled son, who was also in the home, seemingly slept through the attack or was unable to assist.
