I never really expected a ruby-red state like Kentucky to make such a progressive move, but Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear banning the use of ‘conversion therapy’ on minors with an executive order is truly a step in the right direction. This widely discredited practice, which aims to change a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity through counseling, has long-lasting detrimental effects on those subjected to it. It’s appalling that efforts to enact a state law banning this practice repeatedly failed in the Republican-dominated legislature. I can’t help but shake my head in disbelief at the absurdity of the recent comments made by Donald Trump regarding his running mate, JD Vance. Trump’s defense against accusations of Vance being “weird” is to insist that Vance can’t possibly be weird because he’s “so straight.” The correlation Trump draws between being “straight” and not being “weird” is not only illogical but also deeply problematic.
Sexual orientation has absolutely nothing to do with one’s propensity to be strange or odd. The fact that Trump associates being straight with normalcy is a clear reflection of his narrow-minded and outdated mindset.
