It’s truly astonishing to see the audacity of Donald Trump and his campaign staging an event at a black church in Detroit, only to fill it with mostly white attendees. The optics of this situation are beyond concerning. A church, a place of worship and sanctuary, should not be reduced to a mere event space for political rallies. The fact that most of the black attendees were not even from Detroit or part of the congregation speaks volumes about the lack of authenticity in Trump’s attempt to court black voters.

This recent news of an Arizona man planning a mass shooting targeting African Americans at an Atlanta concert in an attempt to incite a race war is both disturbing and deeply concerning. The fact that individuals are still harboring such hateful and racist ideologies in this day and age is a stark reminder of the work that still needs to be done to combat systemic racism and prejudice in our society.

The video of the incident at Baraboo High School’s graduation ceremony is truly heartbreaking. The young graduate appears visibly upset and confused as her father rushes on stage to block the superintendent from shaking her hand. The image of her sitting alone in her row while others are still lined up is particularly poignant. She must have felt so isolated and embarrassed in that moment, surrounded by classmates but feeling completely alone.

As I read about the recent incident involving a Massachusetts teacher who was placed on leave after holding a mock slave auction and using a racial slur in the classroom, I can’t help but feel a sense of frustration and disbelief. How is it possible that in this day and age, we still have educators who think it’s appropriate to engage in such inappropriate and offensive behavior?

After reading about the recent incident involving the tech company in Virginia that posted a ‘whites only’ job posting and subsequently faced fines from the Justice Department, I was both shocked and disappointed. It is disheartening to see such blatant racism still present in our society in 2024. The fact that the job posting explicitly stated “Only Born US Citizens [White]” is not only appalling but also a clear violation of anti-discrimination laws.

Kyle Rittenhouse, a name that has been making headlines for all the wrong reasons. The audacity of this white, middle school dropout to tell Native Americans to “leave” if they don’t like America is beyond comprehension. This land was originally inhabited by Native Americans before it was brutally stolen from them by colonizers like Rittenhouse’s ancestors. The entitlement and ignorance displayed by his comments are truly sickening.
It is mind-boggling that someone like Rittenhouse, who was acquitted of murdering two people, is now being given a platform and even hailed as a hero by certain individuals.
