I just watched the body-cam video released by the Illinois Police of the fatal shooting of a Black woman in her home, and I cannot find the words to express my horror. The video shows Sonya Massey in her kitchen, holding a pot of boiling water, which she refuses to drop when ordered to by the officer. The officer, Grayson, needlessly escalates the situation by drawing his gun and ultimately shooting her in the head. The officer’s callous attitude after the shooting, refusing to provide medical aid and stating he won’t waste his supplies on her, is utterly abhorrent.

I can’t believe that Paul Watson, a veteran environmental activist and anti-whaling campaigner, has been arrested in Greenland on an international arrest warrant issued by Japan. The fact that he may be extradited to Japan is deeply troubling to me. Watson has dedicated his life to fighting against the ruthless slaughter of whales, using direct action tactics that have drawn both support and controversy. His efforts have even been featured in the reality television series “Whale Wars.”
