As I ponder the recent news of Justice Samuel Alito flying the American flag upside-down at his home, I can’t help but feel a sense of disappointment and disbelief. The symbolism of an inverted flag is universally recognized as a distress signal, a call for help or an indication that something is terribly wrong. And for a Supreme Court justice to engage in such an act is not just deeply concerning, but also downright unpatriotic.

I have worked at a couple of these non-union plants in the South. From my experience, as soon as plant leadership gets a whiff of union talk, suddenly a plant-wide “bonus” materializes out of thin air. As of 10-12 years ago, that bonus was $5-7K for every full-time employee. It placates the masses and tampers down union talk for a year or so. That is how most of them keep out unions, at least for a while.

I can’t wrap my head around the fact that a conservative activist’s son, involved in a relentless attack on the Capitol, was sentenced to nearly 4 years in prison. Reading about the extent of his involvement – from breaking windows to leading breaches, attacking law enforcement, stealing from offices, and attempting to stop the transition of power after a valid election – it’s disheartening to see such a lenient punishment. This traitorous behavior, aimed at overthrowing the government, should warrant a much harsher penalty to deter others from engaging in similar acts in the future.
