The signatories included anonymous BBC staff and over 200 from the media industry, alongside historians, actors, academics, and politicians. They have urged the BBC to fulfill its editorial commitments, including challenging Israeli claims and providing historical context. The BBC defended its coverage, stating that it is transparent about any limitations in its reporting.
The Israeli military has announced the killing of Izz al-Din Kassab, one of the last standing senior Hamas officials in the Gaza Strip. Kassab was a member of Hamas’s politburo and was responsible for relations with other extremist groups in the area. Lebanon also denied the claim, expressing their intentions were to seek a mutual ceasefire in accordance with the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, which terminated the previous conflict between these opponents in 2006. Lebanon’s response towards a ceasefire would require the support from Hezbollah, whose allies and members dominate Lebanon’s governmental and parliamentary seats. There is a popular view in Lebanon that a one-sided declaration could potentially be seen as a surrender to Israel.
The Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has ordered his forces to prepare an attack on Israel. This comes after he viewed the results of Israel’s recent strike on Iran, which he deemed could not be ignored. The airstrike targeted Tehran’s military facilities and Khamenei described the lack of response so far as equivalent to admitting defeat. A direct attack was approved in a meeting with the Supreme National Security Council. There are concerns that there may now be a full-blown war between the two countries.
