When I turned off airplane mode and found out that Biden was withdrawing from the presidential race, I have to admit, my first thought was, “Wow, that was quick.” It seems like no major US political event can last just an hour these days. Sandra Hemme, a woman who served 43 years in prison for a crime she did not commit, was finally freed after a judge overturned her murder conviction. The judge ruled that Hemme’s attorneys had presented “clear and convincing evidence” of her innocence, yet Republican Attorney General Andrew Bailey fought against her release in court. It is appalling to think that a woman had to spend over four decades behind bars for a crime she did not commit, only to face further resistance from the Attorney General’s office in gaining her freedom.

I just watched the body-cam video released by the Illinois Police of the fatal shooting of a Black woman in her home, and I cannot find the words to express my horror. The video shows Sonya Massey in her kitchen, holding a pot of boiling water, which she refuses to drop when ordered to by the officer. The officer, Grayson, needlessly escalates the situation by drawing his gun and ultimately shooting her in the head. The officer’s callous attitude after the shooting, refusing to provide medical aid and stating he won’t waste his supplies on her, is utterly abhorrent.
