You’d expect a network like Fox News, typically a staunch opponent of anything remotely left-leaning, to be aggressively demonizing democratic socialists. The way they go about it, with their exaggerated alarmism and nonsensical critiques, is so over the top that it’s starting to backfire, making those policies and ideas seem less like a terrifying specter of communism and more like a reasonable, even desirable, alternative.

The struggle to keep up with housing costs, the postponed family planning due to financial instability – these are tangible realities. When Fox News rails against democratic socialism for wanting things like affordable housing and universal utilities, including accessible broadband, it’s essentially shouting about solutions to very real, widespread problems that are driving people to consider these “radical” ideas in the first place.
The personal stories, too, are incredibly powerful and often paint a grim picture of the current system. The struggle to get long-term care for a parent, the absurdity of being advised to start a GoFundMe for medical expenses when one has been paying taxes their whole life, the harassment faced by citizens while exercising their rights – these are not abstract political talking points. They are deeply human experiences that highlight the failures of a system that seems to prioritize profit over people. When Fox News targets democratic socialism, it’s often by framing these very human needs as dangerous demands, which only serves to underscore their importance.
Furthermore, the conservative media’s reliance on invoking the “Red Scare” of the past feels increasingly out of touch. People are less susceptible to vague warnings of communism when they are facing concrete issues like wealth inequality and the feeling that the rich are getting richer while everyone else struggles. The notion that “psychopathic greedy” individuals will act altruistically without being incentivized or mandated to participate in societal betterment is a hard sell for many. The effectiveness of this strategy is further diminished by the fact that many of the policies championed by democratic socialists are, in essence, practical solutions to societal challenges. The idea that taxes are meant to fund societal improvements that benefit everyone, rather than enriching a select few, is not a revolutionary concept. It’s a return to the fundamental purpose of collective contribution. When Fox News frames these as radical socialist demands, it inadvertently validates the idea that such equitable distribution of resources is what government *should* be doing.
The sheer irony intensifies when you consider that the very act of repeatedly attacking and misrepresenting democratic socialism has, in some ways, increased its visibility and, paradoxically, its appeal. By consistently bringing up the topic, even with negative framing, Fox News keeps it in the public consciousness. And when voters see that the alternative offered by many conservative platforms is either more of the same or a return to a perceived bygone era, the ideas presented by democratic socialists start to look more sensible and forward-thinking. The “boy who cried wolf” analogy rings true; the constant alarm over socialism has dulled its terrifying edge for many.
Ultimately, it seems that by constantly sounding the alarm against democratic socialism, Fox News is inadvertently showcasing its potential benefits to a public that is increasingly dissatisfied with the status quo. The more they try to scare people away from these ideas, the more those ideas become a beacon of hope for those seeking a more equitable and just society. It’s a classic case of unintended consequences, where the efforts to discredit democratic socialism are, in fact, making it sound surprisingly cool.
