The administration’s aggressive tactics, particularly those employed by ICE, are starting to create some cracks in the MAGA foundation. But the question is: how deep are those cracks, and is Trump really wavering? Or is this all just a carefully orchestrated performance?
The core issue appears to be the brutal, undeniable reality of ICE’s actions. It’s one thing to spin a narrative about “fake news” or “woke” policies. It’s quite another to convince people that what they’re seeing with their own eyes is somehow justified. The video of Alex Pretti, a white man and a veteran supporter, being shot repeatedly by ICE agents, seems to have been a turning point for some. This isn’t just a political misstep; it’s an emotional gut punch. The fact that Pretti was a gun owner, and thus aligned with a core Republican value, only complicates matters further. The attempts to spin this as anything other than a blatant execution are failing to gain traction.
Now, it’s easy to say, “They’ll fall in line!” and, sure, there’s some truth to that. But you can see a palpable shift. The usual defense mechanisms – demonizing the victim, focusing on irrelevant details – aren’t working as well as they used to. The narrative is fraying because it’s hard to defend the indefensible, even when you’re a staunch Trump supporter. This is not about Democrats being wrong, it’s about facts being facts. ICE’s actions are simply too graphic. Even the most ardent followers have to reconcile what they are seeing with their own values and beliefs.
The problem for Trump is that he’s built his entire brand on unwavering strength and a willingness to defy political correctness. But now, it appears he has to make a choice. But he may well try to distance himself from the most egregious actions of ICE, or attempt to change the narrative. But you won’t see him admitting that he was wrong.
However, there’s a strong counter-argument as well. MAGA has a history of circling the wagons, no matter how outrageous things get. They have a “us against them” mentality. The loyalty is strong. And they have been getting all of their marching orders from Fox News and other right-wing media outlets. Plus, Trump has never learned to calculate consequences because he has never been held accountable for anything. Some of them will say that the Pretti killing was justified, or that he had it coming. Some won’t even bat an eye. The administration won’t back down. This administration will double down.
The reality, as always, is probably somewhere in the middle. The hardcore base is likely to stick with him, no matter what. Others may quietly start to pull away or voice their disapproval. The story of ICE will be a test of the loyalty of MAGA. The actions of ICE might be a bigger deal. It’s difficult to deny. And if this story becomes widespread, it’s going to be very interesting to see how Trump and his supporters react.
