The US is experiencing a radical counter-revolution, a stark contrast to the ideals of Thomas Paine’s Common Sense, which celebrated American liberty. The Trump administration has openly defied democratic norms, quickly enacting policies that undermine individual rights and international law. This swift transformation has caught opponents off guard. Paine’s vision of America as a haven for freedom is now being subverted as the country is perceived as a model to be avoided, entering a new era of unreason and violence.

The US was a nation the world wanted to emulate – Trump has made it a pariah. This shift, from a nation admired to one viewed with a mixture of pity and disdain, is a stark reality that resonates with a global audience. The change in perception has been dramatic, especially during the Trump presidency. Once, the prospect of living in or visiting the United States was met with enthusiasm; now, the response is often one of concern and disbelief, even from those who previously held America in high regard.
This shift isn’t just about policy disagreements; it’s a deeper erosion of trust and respect. The actions and rhetoric of the Trump administration have alienated allies and emboldened adversaries. The world sees a country grappling with internal divisions, a volatile political climate, and a perceived disregard for international norms. The granting of immunity to those who commit acts of violence sends a chilling message, making the United States seem like a place where safety and justice are no longer guaranteed.
It’s tempting to place all the blame on one individual, but the reality is far more complex. The rise of Trump is a symptom of deeper issues within American society, a decades-long erosion of values and societal norms. The erosion includes the removal of fair and neutral media rules and legalized corruption in campaign finance. While Trump certainly accelerated this decline, the underlying problems predate his presidency. The US has always been an imperialist meddler on the world stage. Anyone who tried to emulate the US quickly became a TARGET of the US.
The problems extend beyond the political arena. Many other democracies have good social nets, free healthcare, and a multi-party system, which is in stark contrast to the US. From the perspective of many in the developed world, the US presents a model of society that they wouldn’t want to emulate. The lack of social safety nets, the for-profit healthcare system, the decaying infrastructure, and the increasing disparity between the wealthy and the poor are all points of concern. These issues predate Trump.
The American dream, once a beacon of hope, has become a source of disillusionment for many. The realities of life in the US – the high cost of healthcare, the prevalence of gun violence, and the erosion of constitutional rights – contradict the idealized image. The US is a joke decades before the schism Trump provided. It is the long plan, sadly working.
Many people globally haven’t wanted to emulate the US. Instead, what the world did, was have to listen to the US, and do what it said, or else the US would retaliate. People may have admired US military power and cultural exports. But, they have often viewed the US for its lack of worker’s rights, healthcare, and excessive gun control.
The US needs to break away from this American Exceptionalism bullshit. The only people that actually wanted to emulate America were corporations and the countries the US installed new dictators in. The US has always been an imperialist meddler on the world stage. Anybody who tried to emulate the US quickly became a TARGET of the US. The US hasn’t had a good reputation for a long time. It’s a lot worse now. But it hasn’t been good for decades. The US is headed up by a literal criminal child-rapist! Trump is the manifestation of every single negative trait that the rest of the world have stereotyped into Americans. The US is headed down a downward trajectory, quicker than anyone could have imagined.
