It was always the plan, and the massive budget allocated to ICE speaks volumes. The scope of their activities has expanded far beyond targeting “dangerous criminals.” The proposal to give ICE a budget larger than France’s entire military is a chilling prospect. The very purpose of this enhanced force, as it appears, is to target and potentially attack citizens. The parallels to historical atrocities, like the rise of the Third Reich, are undeniably unsettling. As Heather Cox Richardson pointed out, the term “secret police” doesn’t necessarily mean their existence is hidden; it often refers to the secrecy surrounding their identities, effectively shielding them from accountability. The rhetoric used to justify ICE’s actions has changed, subtly but purposefully, leading some to perceive them as a legitimate law enforcement body, deserving of unquestioning obedience. It’s truly baffling that so many people fail to recognize the nature of this force.
It’s crucial to understand that ICE is not just another law enforcement agency. It has become something more, something darker. The actions taken by ICE and the individuals who support them mirror tactics of historical oppressors. The potential for abuse of power, the targeting of specific groups, and the erosion of civil liberties are all warning signs. This isn’t new; we’ve been seeing this coming for years. The creation of the Department of Homeland Security after 9/11 marked a turning point, prioritizing security over civil liberties. Those who paid attention saw the writing on the wall. The pardoning of the Proud Boys and their subsequent equipping with weapons underscores the true nature of this paramilitary force. It’s not a secret; it’s being done openly, with malice aforethought. We’re witnessing the formation of a private paramilitary force, loyal not to the Constitution, but to a single individual. The January 6th insurrection, though unsuccessful in its immediate goal, served as a “proof of concept” – a demonstration of the loyalty and willingness to act that Trump could command.
The effort to deport is not a negative thing. Obama who I view as the USAs greatest president deported more people than this operation has. With that being said, this militarizing of the process is disgusting. It should have been kept the same as Obama with plain clothes folks quietly picking up criminals, not masked army men deporting innocent women & children.
Stephen Miller is the driving force behind this transformation, the architect of a system designed to consolidate power and silence dissent. Their recruitment ads for ICE agents serve as a clarion call to those who would embrace white supremacist ideals. The creation of this force is not secret. They are the American Gestapo. Brown shirts. SS. And spineless members of congress are greenlighting it. Trump is manufacturing himself a private army. Even worse, he can allow them to manipulate election and voting data. This is not about law and order; it’s about control.
It’s time to call this what it is: the American Gestapo. Anyone impersonating law enforcement must be reported to the actual police. This isn’t about protecting the country; it’s about self-preservation. Some, with the benefit of foresight, knew that Trump would eventually create such a force. The time to stop it is now. Abolishing ICE is the bare minimum that we can ask for. Even if that means fighting amongst ourselves, it’s better than exporting this fascist insanity to the rest of the world. It’s a frightening thing, and the stakes could not be higher.
