President Donald Trump responded to the news with a social media post, attributing Reiner’s death to “Trump Derangement Syndrome.” The Los Angeles Police Department is investigating the deaths as a homicide, with reports indicating the couple was stabbed. Furthermore, the couple’s son, Nick Reiner, has been arrested and booked on a felony charge with a bail set at $4 million, though the LAPD has not confirmed whether it is related to the homicide investigation.

Donald Trump, seemingly incapable of refraining from self-aggrandizement even in the face of tragedy, has once again managed to shock and appall with his public pronouncements. The focus this time is on the horrific murders of a husband and wife, but as you might expect, the story quickly veers into the realm of his own perceived grievances. In a remarkably insensitive statement, Trump, reflecting on the situation, apparently implied that the late Rob Reiner, the well-known actor and director, had “died due to the anger he caused others” stemming from what Trump calls “Trump Derangement Syndrome.”
This is, frankly, a staggering claim. It’s almost unbelievable that someone could insert themselves into a discussion about a double homicide and somehow twist it to be about their own perceived victimhood. It seems as though Trump’s gravestone will be a place of both notoriety and a final measure of spite for many who have long opposed him. To suggest that someone’s death is somehow the result of their criticism of you is, to put it mildly, beyond the pale. It suggests an incredibly warped sense of self-importance and a complete lack of empathy. If any other public figure engaged in such behavior, it would be met with outrage and condemnation. The fact that this is, sadly, not surprising coming from Trump is perhaps the most disturbing aspect of it all. It shows just how normalized this kind of behavior has become, and the low bar that seems to have been set for those in positions of power.
The very notion of “Trump Derangement Syndrome” is, of course, a convenient deflection. It’s a way to dismiss any and all criticism as the product of mental illness, rather than legitimate disagreement or concern. It’s a tool used to silence dissent and paint anyone who opposes him as irrational and unwell. This rhetoric creates a dangerous environment where disagreement is demonized, and the lines between political debate and personal attacks become increasingly blurred. The fact that the late Mr. Reiner was a vocal critic of Trump is irrelevant in the face of such a tragedy. To then attempt to leverage the circumstances to fuel division and advance an agenda is a truly depraved action.
The reaction to such pronouncements is almost as predictable as the statements themselves. Supporters of Trump, seemingly undeterred by the blatant lack of compassion, will likely defend his remarks, chalking them up to “telling it like it is” or “not being politically correct.” Some might even find humor in them, a further indication of the desensitization that seems to have taken hold. It’s tempting to become numb to these types of pronouncements. It’s so easy to expect the worst and unfortunately, in this case, the worst is what we get. But it’s crucial not to let that happen. We cannot allow this behavior to become normalized. We cannot allow someone to make light of another’s death, or use it as a tool to promote their own narrative. It’s a clear signal that this person doesn’t care about anyone but themselves. It reveals an absence of basic human decency, and it should be met with unwavering condemnation. The need to hold those in positions of power accountable for their words and actions has never been more vital.
The fact that Trump seemingly cannot resist the urge to inject himself into any situation, regardless of its gravity, speaks volumes about his character. It’s almost as if he’s incapable of seeing beyond his own ego, and in doing so, reveals the emptiness at the core. The world is reduced to a stage where everything is ultimately about him. It’s a tragic, pathetic, and ultimately dangerous way to be. This is a moment when we should be focused on the victims, their families, and the need for justice. Instead, we are forced to confront another instance of narcissistic grandstanding. The focus should be on sympathy, support, and the proper processes of investigating these horrific murders. The fact that Trump cannot even find the space to honor these individuals, or even just be silent, is a stain on all those who support him, and all those who allow this behavior to continue unchallenged.
