Judge orders the release of an immigrant with ties to White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt. This situation, frankly, stinks to high heaven. The core of it all revolves around Bruna Ferreira, a 33-year-old woman who, until recently, was engaged to Michael, the brother of Karoline Leavitt, the White House Press Secretary.
It’s hard not to immediately think, “Is this just another example of the powerful getting preferential treatment?” Her attorney stated the government never even argued she was a flight risk or a danger. So, why was she detained in the first place? Some people are rightly asking if this is a show, a political stunt designed to appease certain voters. It feels like they’re playing a game, arresting and releasing her to fulfill some quota, all while wasting time and resources.
One thing is certain, the entire situation is ripe for awkward family gatherings. The Department of Homeland Security initially labeled Ferreira a “criminal illegal alien,” alleging a battery charge which her lawyer denied. It is certainly a case of there being two sets of laws in America. One for the well-connected and wealthy, and another for everyone else.
This whole thing has the stench of nepotism. It is a clear demonstration that it’s not what you know, but *who* you know. There is also the suggestion that the brother’s intent was to use the situation to win a custody battle. This is the definition of next-level evil.
It seems the brother wants full custody and doesn’t want to pay child support. Detention by ICE appears to be used as a weapon, causing terror and discouraging immigrants from remaining in or coming to the United States. This does seem to be the goal of these arrests, rather than a genuine concern for public safety.
The story brings into focus the funding that Donald Trump has bolstered for ICE and the incentives used to attract recruits. People fear that at some point, more power will be given to ICE so it can be used to go after “undesirables” and “extremists” – a worrying thought. It begs the question: how many people are being unjustly swept up?
The data shows ICE has arrested tens of thousands of people with no criminal records. The whole situation screams of a system that protects the in-groups while binding and not protecting the out-groups. Ferreira, the ex-fiancée, was detained because of a personal grudge, not because she was a criminal. ICE was called on her so the brother could get custody of their child and have her deported. That is a horrifying misuse of power.
It’s almost certainly the case that ICE is being used as a private police force. Detaining and handling immigrants is becoming a form of practice for these people. The potential for abuse is clear. Many people believe immigration statuses are outdated, with grey areas, and that a lot of abductees with “criminal records” have just become caught in a bureaucratic nightmare. The numbers tell the story.
