That kind of scenario just doesn’t pass the smell test. It makes you wonder when the last time someone actually got violent with federal law enforcement, got arrested for it, and then walked free without any formal charges. You’re left wondering what happened to the support we supposedly give our troops when they find themselves targeted. In this particular case, the veteran is not White, highlighting the racial element that can sometimes play a role in these encounters.
The claim that he obstructed the agents when they had his car surrounded and yelled conflicting commands to him is baffling. If this was true, there would be a clear case to bring, and it wouldn’t take three days to build. Instead, it’s all been handled with a blatant disregard for the rights of citizens.
DHS’s story just doesn’t seem to hold water. The fact that he wasn’t White or White-passing is a key factor, because the lack of support he will receive makes it feel like this is all done by design. It really does make you wonder if being a veteran even matters in these situations.
The whole situation feels like a betrayal. The veteran served, presumably believing in the values of the country, and is now getting treated in a way that’s clearly a breach of those values. The lack of transparency and accountability is what makes it all the more concerning. There is so much to be concerned about and a lack of trust for ICE.
