During the Valdai Discussion Club meeting in Sochi on October 2, 2025, President Vladimir Putin issued a stern warning to Europe regarding its support for Ukraine. Putin threatened a “significant” response if European nations continued arming Ukraine, accusing them of fueling the conflict and hindering its resolution. He maintained Russia did not initiate the war while closely observing the continent’s “militarization,” placing blame on Europe for escalating the hostilities.

Putin threatens Europe with a “significant” response if it continues to arm and support Kyiv. It’s hard not to see this as a sign that the strategy of supporting Ukraine is actually working. After all, why would you threaten something if it wasn’t impacting your plans?

Or, perhaps this is the intended response, a way to try and intimidate Europe into backing down. The question is, are we being paranoid, or not paranoid enough? It certainly sounds like the words of someone who might be feeling the pressure, and that the initial expectation of a swift victory and a compliant Europe hasn’t come to pass. The saber-rattling of a weak man, relying on others to crumble, has not worked.

It’s remarkable, really, how long it took for the West to realize that the threat of nuclear war wasn’t an immediate one. While the saber-rattling goes on, so many lives have been lost, so many people injured, and so many displaced. It seems almost surreal to hear this kind of threat, especially after the reality of the war has been so brutal and drawn out.

What a strange situation it is, that after all this time, this kind of threat can still be made, it is as if, a bully complaining because they are being hit back. It is quite absurd, really.

The situation reminds us of honesty in politics, a novel idea, perhaps, or a pipe dream. Yet, the path ahead has always been clear, and remains so: continue arming Ukraine and equipping it to defend itself, and help its people to fight back against the aggressor. It seems, appeasement has never worked.

The reality is, Russia is unlikely to use nuclear weapons. If that were ever the plan, it would have happened by now. We see it as sad that so many lives have been lost, and now the conversation about Ukraine is once again, about one man’s decisions.

You don’t get to dictate the terms of a war you started, and especially not when it’s gone so badly. The fact is, the threats coming from the Kremlin are just that: threats. It’s easy to see these pronouncements as a sign of desperation rather than strength.

This is just another Tuesday, it seems. Russia is always threatening, but what can they actually do? Why hasn’t this so-called “significant response” been unleashed already? It appears he can’t even handle the war in Ukraine.

And the hypocrisy is staggering. Russia gets to receive support from Iran, North Korea, China, and India, but other countries are not allowed to support Ukraine. Putin and Russia always threaten with a significant response, a red line on shifting sand.

It also looks as though Russia has been preparing its population for a wider war with Europe, even though there don’t seem to be any concrete plans to start one. And of course, they will continue to threaten, as always.

The entire situation seems to have been reduced to threats and posturing, the bullying and sabre-rattling of a school yard conflict. It has been going on for a very long time. The question is when do these threats actually mean something?

And the most important question, how did we end up in the hands of a few old lunatics?
