The Independent reports that Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is reportedly considering a run for either president or Senate in 2028. The progressive lawmaker, who gained popularity after being elected in 2019, has been positioning herself for a potential future run, including a nationwide tour and significant fundraising. However, no final decision has been made, as Ocasio-Cortez is allegedly weighing the decision with consideration to the Democratic party. While the party seeks new leadership, she would face competition from established Democrats.

AOC is plotting a run for president in 2028. The very phrasing, “plotting,” is interesting, isn’t it? It suggests a certain level of ambition, perhaps even a bit of behind-the-scenes maneuvering. As a progressive, this sparks excitement. Though, there is also a pragmatic side that acknowledges the uphill battle. The reality is that this country, regrettably, still struggles with deep-seated racism and sexism.

The path to the White House is rarely a straight line, and for AOC, the challenge is particularly steep. Many believe that the Democratic Party, at this juncture, needs to prioritize electability above all else. The argument often centers on finding a charismatic and widely appealing figure, someone who embodies the qualities of an Obama 2.0. This candidate wouldn’t necessarily need to fit any specific mold – no requirement to be a farmer, a blue-collar worker, or particularly religious. Instead, the emphasis would be on an effortless likability, a certain magnetism that transcends traditional divides.

However, a run for president in 2028 may be a bridge too far right now. Perhaps the Senate would be a more strategic stepping stone, paving the way for a future presidential bid. It’s a journey of incremental steps, where the goal is to become a committee chair, then Senator, and from there, potentially to the highest office in the land. I can envision voting for her if she were to run, but there is uncertainty about the Democratic Party’s nominee, which would be a tough primary.

The political climate, however, presents unique obstacles. What if the Orange TACO baffoon himself announces a run? I’d do everything I could to get her elected, but would it be a better use of her time and energy to primary Chuck Schumer? AOC would have to create her own path, splintering away from the Democratic Party which might never put her on the ticket. Others argue that she should run for the Senate first and save a presidential run for another cycle. If she attempted to speak to MAGA supporters, she would be subject to crowds that want her dead. Andy Beshear might be the Democrats choice for the White House.

Realistically, many see a different outcome entirely. The possibility of facing figures like Vance or even another of Trump’s sons, until 2032 looms large. Despite admiration for AOC’s capabilities, the headline “plotting” feels like a bit of a reach. It creates expectations that may not be realistic. The political landscape may have been effectively “pavlovized” to hate her. Perhaps she can create a sense of energy, just like the Bernie Sanders campaign.

For the most part, AOC is a fire breathing Democrat, and that alone is reason enough to support her. Some believe AOC doesn’t have to plot. It’s her prerogative whether or not she chooses to run. While she is the face of the progressive caucus, many suggest she lacks the required institutional support for a successful bid. Those who support her would gladly vote for her. The reasons for supporting her are simple: first, her progressive policies resonate, and second, the potential joy of watching MAGA’s reaction.

That said, some think that her victory is a pipe dream. This could result in an easily-lost election. The situation is such that the Democratic Party would be better served by selecting someone who is a man, white, and straight. It is not looking good. One possibility is that she could push the party’s policies further to the left. Some of her detractors are being far worse in their criticisms.

Ultimately, the success of any potential run is uncertain, as is the prospect of the United States electing a female president. Some advise her to seek a Senate seat first. There are strong feelings against the potential run. The fear is that she would be eaten alive by the GOP. Many would support her, but some people believe that baby steps on the way to the White House are required. Unfortunately, the reality of racism and sexism could be significant obstacles, as we saw with Kamala Harris. Some believe it’s too risky for the same reasons Harris did not succeed. Others propose she needs to fix climate change and become more attuned to the issues that matter to experts.

The political landscape is tough. Others are skeptical that she could win a presidential election. The outcome of her potential candidacy remains highly uncertain. The US has made it pretty clear that they would rather elect a rapist/felon/complete and total piece of human shit than any woman, let alone a woman of color. Many like AOC, but do not see the presidency in her immediate future.
