Jim Jordan to Be Questioned Under Oath in Ohio State Sex Abuse Scandal

Rep. Jim Jordan to be questioned under oath on Ohio State doctor sex abuse scandal is a situation that’s been a long time coming. It’s hard not to think that a lot of “I don’t recalls” and Fifth Amendment invocations are going to be part of the landscape. The very idea of an oath seems almost quaint, a relic of a time when concepts like duty and integrity actually carried weight. It feels like accountability is finally knocking on the door, which is a good thing.

The core of the issue, of course, is Jordan’s alleged knowledge of, and potentially his inaction regarding, the sexual abuse perpetrated by Dr. Richard Strauss at Ohio State University. Strauss, as we know, abused at least 177 male student athletes. Investigations revealed that faculty members were aware of the abuse quite early on. The fact that Jordan was the assistant wrestling coach at the time puts him squarely in the potential line of fire.

It stands to reason, given his role, that Jordan would have had some awareness of what was happening. Even if, and this is a big if, he truly didn’t know, his lack of awareness would arguably be just as concerning. Regardless, being questioned under oath is long overdue.

Furthermore, this questioning is also a chance for Jordan to face some scrutiny for his past actions. He’s led a number of politically charged inquiries and hearings, many of which felt more like political theater than serious investigations. He also famously refused to comply with a subpoena from the January 6th investigation, which is ironic considering he has issued subpoenas of his own with what could be perceived as political motivations.

This questioning could feel like a dose of his own medicine, but the harsh reality is that the most likely outcome is a slap on the wrist, if anything. Getting Jordan out of office might be a significant victory. Even so, Republicans seem to be ignoring sexual predators, so it’s hard to expect any serious ramifications for him. It’s a shame, because he absolutely should have to pay the price for what many believe was his complicity.

He’s avoided answering questions about this for years. It’s likely that he won’t reveal anything new or admit to knowing anything. It’s about time he faces scrutiny under oath. It’s sad to say, but I don’t expect anything significant to come of this. Jordan’s alleged involvement has been known for years.

The situation reflects a troubling pattern of behavior: protecting abusers. When you consider all the details, it is a pattern of those in positions of authority looking the other way. The question is often asked, how does someone wind up so entangled with perversity?

In the current environment, the power of an oath is debatable. With the right resources, it may not matter, and the outcome might be more about avoiding legal repercussions and avoiding public shame. I would not be surprised to hear a lot of “I don’t recall,” or “I choose to invoke my Fifth Amendment privilege.”

Jim Jordan protected rapists while he was on the wrestling staff. He allegedly turned away help. And then he used his influence in Washington to undermine the victims. To make matters worse, he was involved in the January 6th investigation.

It’s a situation that could damage his reputation, and potentially cost him an election. Considering recent events, this could change the political landscape.

Some are curious if this will be available on CSPAN. The most likely outcome is a string of “I don’t recall” answers. And the potential for perjury charges down the road is something to consider. It is also worth noting that this scandal happened years ago.

While some might suggest this as being a waste of time, it’s important for him to have his day.
