Any negotiation that fails to address this central point is doomed to fail, no matter how many concessions are made.
This isn’t a situation where a simple ceasefire will solve the underlying conflict. Russia’s continued escalation, their preparations for a major summer offensive, highlight the deep-seated nature of the problem. Empty promises of international coalitions, or hopes for a negotiated settlement that ignores Ukraine’s fundamental demands, only prolong the suffering and perpetuate the violence. These aren’t just military actions; they are acts of deliberate destruction, leaving behind a trail of devastation and despair.

The propaganda videos showcasing rebuilding efforts in some areas, are thinly veiled attempts to deceive the international community. The destruction is far more widespread, so extensive that it would take years, if not decades, of intensive effort to restore normalcy. These acts are not those of a nation seeking peace.
The hope that Moscow will be “curb-stomped” into submission, that a new leadership will emerge, and that a subsequent change in policy will lead to a better future is a sentiment shared by many. Such a scenario, however, assumes a relatively straightforward outcome to a complex geopolitical problem. This wishful thinking doesn’t address the core issue: the need for Russia to accept responsibility, apologize for its atrocities, and cede all illegally occupied Ukrainian territory.
Ultimately, the underlying issue of the conflict boils down to a fundamental lack of trust and respect amongst the individuals and nations involved. Their continued actions expose a level of bad faith that undermines any meaningful attempt at reconciliation. It is a deep-seated distrust that hinders any possibility of genuine peace, and makes any attempt at negotiation difficult, if not impossible. Until that fundamental element of trust is restored, any peace talks will likely remain futile. The simple reality is that until Russia reverses course, there is no basis for a lasting peace.
