This led to Democrats prioritizing “normal” governance, neglecting crucial preemptive measures like electoral reform or challenging Trump’s actions more aggressively. A shift is needed from adhering to traditional norms to utilizing all available legal tools to counter Trump’s authoritarian tendencies, even if it means employing unconventional tactics. This includes proactive legal challenges to anticipated Trump policies, filling key positions, and utilizing executive powers before the transition of power. Ultimately, a more forceful, proactive approach is necessary to effectively impede Trump’s agenda.

Outgoing Democrats need to drastically alter their approach. For too long, they’ve prioritized civility and cooperation, hoping to find common ground with a party that shows no interest in compromise. This strategy, rooted in a misguided belief in the power of reasoned discourse, has yielded disastrous results. The time for gentle persuasion is over; the time for hardball tactics has arrived.
This isn’t about abandoning principles, but about recognizing that the rules of engagement have changed. The current political climate demands a more assertive, even aggressive, response. The “wait-and-see” approach, which relies on hoping opponents will self-destruct, has proven ineffective. The belief that respecting the office and engaging in respectful dialogue will lead to positive outcomes ignores the reality that the current administration views such behavior as weakness.
Blue state governors, in particular, must take a firm stance against federal overreach. The notion of patiently collaborating with an administration actively undermining democratic norms is not only naive but actively dangerous. When federal agencies infringe on state jurisdiction, a clear and unambiguous rejection is required, not polite requests for “assistance.” Similarly, threats of financial retribution should be met with defiant resistance, not appeasement.
The current administration thrives on intimidation and humiliation. By consistently rolling over and attempting to negotiate from a position of weakness, Democrats have emboldened their adversaries. The time for placating opponents is over; the only way to confront a bully is to stand your ground and refuse to be intimidated.
The idea that Democrats should adhere to a higher moral standard while Republicans systematically dismantle democratic institutions is ludicrous. The time for “chivalry and justice” has long passed; the current battle necessitates playing by the rules of the game as they currently exist. This does not condone unethical behavior, but it does suggest the need to deploy the same tools and tactics used by opponents—within the boundaries of the law.
The claim that Democrats are incapable of hardball politics is a self-fulfilling prophecy. They have consistently missed opportunities to deploy aggressive countermeasures, and the perception of weakness has led to repeated electoral defeats. The assertion that Democrats wouldn’t have played hardball in the past offers little hope for change, but the stakes are now so high that inaction is simply not an option. The situation requires bold moves and strategic calculations, rather than the well-intentioned but ultimately futile appeals to decency and common sense.
The common arguments against a hardball strategy – concerns over political backlash, reputational damage, and the perceived immorality of such tactics – are now moot. The cost of inaction far outweighs the risks of a more confrontational approach. A failure to act decisively will only result in the further erosion of democratic norms and the consolidation of power by those actively seeking to dismantle the system.
The idea of launching investigations, releasing damaging information, and refusing to cooperate with opponents isn’t about resorting to underhanded tactics, it’s about utilizing all available legal and political tools to protect democracy. The notion that only some kind of massive, coordinated effort, like a general strike, could change things overlooks the reality that even small acts of defiance can have a cumulative impact.
The notion that it’s “too late” to effectively counter the current administration is a defeatist attitude that only empowers the opposition. While there’s no guarantee of success, it’s far better to fight aggressively than to passively accept defeat.
Dems’ past failures to deploy hardball tactics cannot be overlooked. The assertion that they would never be willing to abandon civility only reinforces the perception of weakness and invites further aggression from opponents. The time for apologies and explanations is over; decisive action is needed. The next election cycle is too far off; now is the time for a dramatic shift in strategy. A dramatic shift toward a more forceful approach is the only option left. It’s time for Democrats to quit playing nice. It’s time to play hardball.
